Are Allergies Leaving You with a Runny Nose?

One of the most common symptoms of allergies is a runny nose, known formally as rhinorrhea.  Dealing with a constant runny nose can be stressful enough, but the symptom can often lead to worse conditions if not treated.

When allergens, such as pollen or dust, are inhaled by someone with allergy sensitivity, mucous membranes lining the nasal cavity may produce an increased amount of mucus fluid.  As a result, the excess fluid can’t be processed by the body and thus the sufferer will wipe and blow their nose throughout the day and night.

A Runny Nose Can Lead to Worse Conditions

On its own, a runny nose can be an annoyance, and the nose and sinuses can become sore from all the maintenance.  Blockage of the nasal cavity can result in difficulty breathing through the nose or air pressure that causes headaches and facial pain.

If left untreated, mucus can continue to accumulate in the Eustachian tube (part of the middle ear) or throat, and many other more complicated conditions can arise.  These include:

Relief from a Runny Nose for Houston Residents

When a runny nose is constant due to allergies, treatment of the allergies is what will help curb the symptom of excess mucus.  The first step is to determine what is causing the allergies, and then what kind of treatment options are available.

At Houston Sinus & Allergy, we provide comprehensive allergy testing through skin tests and physical examinations.  This pinpoints why a runny nose or other symptoms are occurring.  Next, our skilled ear, nose and throat specialist, Dr. Nguyen, will decide the extent of the treatment necessary.  This can range from prescribing medication like an antihistamine to immunology, which involves a shots or oral drops that will stimulate and strengthen a patient’s immune system.
