Ear infections are a common condition all over the country. Children are most susceptible, and nearly 80% of children under 4 years old in the US have experienced the discomfort of an ear infection at one time or another. Even though ear infections in children are common, they should not be confused with a natural part of growing up and require treatment when they occur. Also, age doesn’t matter, ear infections can happen to anyone.
The symptoms associated with an ear infection can range from a mild ache to a significant amount of pain. Ear ache, pain, loss of appetite, loss of sleep, difficulty hearing, dizziness and fever are other common symptoms of an ear infection. These symptoms are often challenging, especially when they are happening to a young child. Even though most ear infections typically resolve in a few days, it’s important to visit your physician for a physical examination to understand the cause of your pain, the type of infection and to help ensure it doesn’t spread or turn into something worse.
Untreated ear infections can lead to more serious complications such as recurring infections, damage to the bone and cartilage (mastoiditis), hearing loss, eardrum perforation, meningitis, facial nerve paralysis and the possibility of Meniere’s disease in adults. An ear infection should be treated as soon as possible so, if you live in the Cypress-Fairbanks area and think you have an ear infection, contact us at Houston Sinus & Allergy immediately.
Our office has been successfully treating patients suffering from ear pain and ear infection in Cypress-Fairbanks (Cy-Fair) and the Harris County communities for over a decade. Our resident physician Dr. Nguyen is a national expert and our Houston clinic has been the recipient of numerous awards such as the Living Best Readers Choice Award. Often patients (or parents), do not wish to visit the North Cypress Medical Center, Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center or the Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital and instead favor our private clinic where we give our undivided attention to every patient and never charge hospital fees.
The human ear is made up out of three sections; the outer, middle and inner ear. There are three corresponding types of ear infections, depending on the location of your pain.
An outer ear infection (also known as Swimmer’s Ear), is caused by an inflammation of the outer portion of the ear. These infections are typically bacterial and often occur when water, sand or dirt makes its way into the ear canal. Moist air (like that often found in Cy-Fair) and swimming can leave our ears vulnerable to an outer ear infection.
Typical treatments for an outer ear infection include medicated ear drops to stop bacterial growth and medications for pain (Tylenol, Advil), but more severe cases may require antibiotics and stronger pain medications. Outer ear infections typically resolve in 7-10 days.
A middle ear infection can be caused by either a bacterial or viral infection. Foodborne or airborne allergies, nutritional deficiencies, a blocked Eustachian tube or infections in other parts of the body can lead to a middle ear infection.
include all symptoms of an outer ear infection but are often accompanied with a thick, glue like fluid discharge from the middle ear.
To best treat a middle ear infection, the cause of the infection must first be understood. Analgesic ear drops, antibiotic medications, a surgical tube insertion to drain fluid or an adenoidectomy are common treatments for middle ear infections. This type of ear infection also typically clears up within 7-10 days with treatment.
An inner ear infection (also known as Labyrinthitis) is often caused by other infections within the body such as sinus, throat or tooth infections. This type of infection is characterized by an inflammation or irritation of the parts of the ear responsible for hearing and balance. The most common cause of an inner ear infection is a virus, but bacterial causes can occur as well.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and think you may have an inner ear infection – contact our office immediately to discuss how to treat ear infections.
Being unable to hear properly or suffering from pain in your ear isn’t normal and can cause even day-to-day activities to become difficult. Ear infections in children are common and can often be challenging for the entire family. Do not leave an ear infection untreated because the risk of long term issues elevates and can lead to a more drastic impact on your health.
Don’t leave an ear infection to chance – it’s crucial to get the correct treatment for any ear infection. Contact our Houston Sinus & Allergy office immediately if you suspect you or a loved one is suffering from an ear infection in Cypress-Fairbanks.
