"Dr. Nguyen and his staff are very nice. The sinus procedure was tough at the beginning as I could not take steroids to aid the recovery process, but now I'm feeling great!"
Ear infections can affect your day to day activities. While ear pain might go away on its own in a few days, you should go to an ENT doctor to get an examination and unravel the real cause of the ear pain.
Houston Sinus & Allergy has been helping patients determine the cause of ear infections, and relieving the symptoms, for over ten years. Our board certified ENT physician Dr. Nguyen specializes in treatment of ear infections.
Ear infection treatment options include;
The best way to find out if you have an ear infection or any ear problem is to consult your doctor. However, if you have symptoms like ear pain, poor hearing, dizziness, fullness in your ear, a spinning sensation, ringing in the ear or you find it difficult to maintain your balance, then you need to see your doctor for a diagnosis.
When you book an assessment with Dr. Nguyen, he’ll ask for your medical history to be sure you aren’t suffering from the side effects of any medications, nervous system disorders, head injury or heart disease. Then, he’ll use an instrument called an otoscope to look into your ear. This instrument helps him view the ear canal, eardrum and other vital parts of your ear. He’ll check for swelling, redness, wax buildup or abnormalities in the ear.
During the examination, he may test the eardrum by puffing air against it. If it does not respond, it may indicate that fluid has gathered inside the middle ear. He may also use an instrument called a tympanometer, which uses sound and air pressure to detect the presence of fluid in the inner ear.
Dr. Nguyen uses two main different types of treatment plans for ear infections in Houston. After your diagnosis, you may be asked to take medication or go through a procedure to remove fluid from your ears.
Two main types of medication can treat ear infections:
If the ear infection has resulted in complications and fluid has remained in the ear for a long time, Dr. Nguyen may recommend a procedure known as myringotomy or ear tube placement. This process drains any excess fluid that has collected in the ear.
During this procedure, he’ll create a tiny hole in the eardrum so that water, pus or blood can drain through it. In most cases, the ear tube will eventually fall out on its own after six to 18 months. The tube will also help to:
This surgical procedure can be performed with local anesthesia and takes about 15 minutes. Recovery time is fast, and you can return to your normal activities within 24 hours.
