Can a scratchy throat lead to further complications?

I often suffer from a scratchy throat during the peak allergy seasons. I have had cases so bad that I have been unable to speak for hours due to the discomfort. This prompted me to investigate further whether or not a scratchy throat lead to further complications?

Yes, a scratchy throat can lead to more complications especially if it leads to voice loss.

Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx, part of the throat, characterized by voice loss and irritation of the vocal cords. This condition has many causes, including smoking, shouting, severe gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), and various allergies.

Inflammation can also be caused by some serious medical conditions such as tonsillitis, bronchitis, or even pneumonia. If caused by an infection, the disease causing the laryngitis it may be contagious and must be treated appropriately.
