Should I be worried about my loss of smell and taste?

0

I have had the worst case of allergies this past summer and had experienced numerous occasion where my nostrils have been clogged.  I’ve now noticed that I have lost my sense of taste and smell and am growing concerned. Should I be worried or will my senses return to one the congestion had past.

Hi there,

Thanks for your question.

The effects of nasal congestion can have various outcomes for its sufferers, two of the most common being a loss of smell (Anosmia) and a loss of taste (Ageusia).

The loss of smell, often times, isn’t serious, but it can sometimes be a sign of a nervous system (neurological) condition. Anosmia can be caused by temporary or permanent irritation or destruction of the mucous membranes lining the inside of your nose. This can be caused by:

– Acute sinusitis (sinus infection)
– Common cold
– Hay fever (allergic rhinitis)
– Influenza (flu)
– Nonallergic rhinitis (chronic congestion or sneezing not related to allergies)
